Why You Should Enter Scriptwriting Competitions
I’ve been writing scripts and stage plays for about a decade now. God, where did time go? Down the drain, that’s where. Kidding, I’m not bitter. And pretty early on, I realized that there was something I needed to.
I started entering competitions. It started with the BBC Writersroom when I was still far too inexperienced and just not good (what was I thinking?!), and ten years later, I’ve been shortlisted and in the quarter-finals of many competitions with several projects. And let me tell ya, entering scripwriting contests is one of the best things you can do as a scriptwriter.
Networking and feedback
It’s a great way to put yourself out there. You may not win or even place very high, but sending your script to competitions is a great way of getting out of your comfort zone, not to mention getting over that nagging fear of rejection, or worse, feedback.
It is also a smart way to network. We all need to network and make ourselves known in this industry, one way or another. And this is a great way to be in touch with your fellow writers and judges, and there are even organizations, websites and social media groups for these kinds of things.
