SHOWS YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING: Taxi Driver (2021)
For the second installment of SHOWS YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING, we’re going all the way to South Korea for the absolutely awesome Taxi Driver (2021 -).
Taxi Driver follows Kim Do-gi (Lee Je-hoon), a South Korean military veteran who works as a taxi driver for the Rainbow Taxi Company, a fake taxi service which actually offers revenge services for people who have been wronged. As the show goes on, we see that the main members of the Rainbow Taxi Service have their motives for being there: Kim Do-gi’s mother was killed when he came back from the military; hacker Ahn Go-eun (Pyo Ye-jin) lost her sister to suicide after videos of her started being shared on the internet; and CEO Jang Sung-chul (Kim Eui-sung) is the director of a foundation for victims of crime. Their underworld counterparts and the show’s villains and antagonists are the ruthless criminals who commit atrocities against the many characters who come into contact with Rainbow. Hot on everyone’s heels is Prosecutor Kang Ha-na (Esom), an ambitious individual who will stop at nothing to get to the truth.
Unsurprisingly, Taxi Driver is a thrilling revenge tale, somewhat violent at times, but ultimately incredibly satisfying. Its excellence lies in its relatability, sense of justice and good character arcs. To top it off, it looks stunning and the action scenes are always exciting. Its only flaw may lie in the overt fight scenes, which at times are a bit over-the-top and self-congratulatory. Apart from that, at sixteen episodes, one hour each, Taxi Driver is quite the ride from start to finish. The second season is due to come out in 2023.
You should be watching Taxi Driver on Netflix.
