SHOWS YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING: New Heights (2021)
I recently moved into my new place and, having been without WiFi for like two weeks, I finally plugged in my new router. Internet again, hurrah! And what does one do when one gets their WiFi back? One catches up on the many shows one’s been missing. First world, right? So this gave me an idea. Much like the YAY or NAY posts, or indeed Stream it or Skip it and the likes, I shall be reviewing current shows that I find to be relatively underrated or that I think deserve more attention. This will be a monthly thing. Sorry. First up, NEW HEIGHTS (2021).
The Netflix Swiss drama New Heights, or Neumatt, got some attention when it came out but nowhere near what it should have got. Created by Marianne Wendt, New Heights follows Michi Wyss (Julian Koechlin), a smart and successful corporate consultant living the high-life in Zurich who inherits his old family farm after the suicide of his father.
A perfect blend between the two worlds it inhabits, New Heights is a drama about opposites. Rural vs urban, past vs present, working class vs big shot corporations… And Michi Wyss navigates these two worlds achingly and beautifully. On the one hand, there’s his family: his younger brother Lorenz (Jerome Humm), who wants to save his father’s farm and be a farmer himself, his sister Sarah (Sophie Hutter), who has different ideas about the whole thing and…
