I Was Making Pennies A Year Ago On Medium… — Here Are 5 Things I Did To Change That
I’ve been writing on Medium for a while now and in 2022, I became eligible for payment. Hurrah! This is all still quite insane to me, to be honest. I’ve been blogging for a million years, specifically nine. I have a blog on WordPress, The Old Hollywood Garden where I write about Hollywood’s Golden Age, and a Substack about film noir, The Losers of Film Noir — it’s much nicer than it sounds. Getting paid to talk about the things I love is a dream come true!
However, blogging in its many iterations is currently my only job — until I become a top Hollywood screenwriter, obvs — so I’m constantly hyper aware of how much money I make. And I’m by no means a millionaire, or even in the Medium top 1000. Not even close. I’ve been sort of getting by.
And 2023 was a crazy year for me, in terms of money. My earnings were up and down at the beginning of the year, much to my dismay and surprise. I wrote what I consider to be some of my best work on Medium in March and April, and stuff that, frankly, seems to be the kind of thing people like to read on here. For instance, I wrote about blogging, overcoming writer’s block as well as some movie-related posts. I picked the right tags, I shared it on the socials, as per usual and I thought it was going well.
