I totally get it. I’m on Substack with The Losers of Film Noir because I wanted something different (I’m already on Medium and WordPress) and I thought Substack would be the right fit. It’s a bit frustrating, and the fact that I have more free subscribers than paid ones doesn’t help. But it’s actually quite liberating to write on it. If you have a niche subject, it’s good fantastic. The layout could do with some work, I think, but other than that, I like it! It’s all about finding what suits you best :)
