Five alternative Best Picture winners
It’s Oscar season! If you know me, you’ll know that the Oscars are my favorite event and my favorite day of the year. You’ll also know that I’m a total nerd who needs to get a life. But I digress. And before we go any further, I want to make it absolutely clear that I am aware that the Oscars are by no means a reflection on a film or performance’s quality or longevity. The fact that Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock never won a competitive Oscar kind of says it all, really. But it is something that’s been deeply embedded in movie culture for literally 94 years (!), for better or for worse and I, for one, enjoy the madness of it all. And so, as we approach the 94th Oscars (March 27th), I shall be doing some Oscar-related things and annoying everyone, just like every year. Over at the blog, I’ll be going over one of the greatest ever Best Supporting Actor-winning performances. Here at Medium, get ready for my Five Best Picture-nominated films that I think should have won.
CRITERIA
- The movie I choose as the alternative Best Picture winner HAS to have been nominated in that category. So, as much I’d like to say The African Queen over An American in Paris, The Usual Suspects over Braveheart or Vertigo over Gigi, I am afraid none of those were nominated for Best Picture (seriously, look it up)
