But surely when someone’s body of work is out there for everyone to experience and if you experience it in a deep level, mourning them is inevitable. Saying that you wouldn’t mourn a celebrity because you’ve never met them DESPITE the fact that you’ve most certainly seen their films, listened to their music etc, surely makes the fact that you’ve ‘never met them’ moot. You wouldn’t give a shit about my grandmother because my grandmother hasn’t done anything in the public eye that has reached YOU in any way, so that it would be reasonable enough for you to mourn her. You are not aware of my grandmother’s existence in any way, shape or form. That can’t be said for a celebrity and their contribution to the world. You not mourning my grandmother does not fall into the same category as you not mourning a celebrity. Which is precisely my point. As I’ve explained in the article. And as far as people not needing to justify their reasons, they do justify it. And it’s usually that. And that’s why I wrote the piece.
