You know what they say about first impressions. One in the hand is worth two in th- wait, is that the right expression? Anyway, first impressions matter. Much like a film’s opening shot, a song’s opening lyric can set the scene, the mood and the characters. How else would we know where Tommy used to work? Or what instrument Ziggy played?

To some, lyrics don’t matter, it’s all about the music, man! Others feel that they need to convey their innermost thoughts and feelings through words. And so, songwriters have tried to come up with clever, cute, punching or grand opening lyrics to their songs since the dawn of time.

These are just some of my favourites. Remember, this is a subjective list and in no particular order! I am also not saying these are the eight greatest opening lines ever, just eight opening lines I love.

Oh and I’m going to avoid the usual ones, like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Basket Case’ or ‘Sound of Silence’. I feel they get talked about too much and there’s nothing left to say about them.

Here we go!
