You know that game where you have to pick 10 people that you would invite to your dinner party? I’ve done that with most people from Hollywood’s Golden Age (shocker!). Cary Grant? Yes, please. Lauren Bacall? Come on in. Katharine Hepburn? She should probably just move in with me. But what if we were to narrow it down to just filmmakers? Well, these next six masters are certainly up there with my would-be guests at my would-be dinner party.

As a writer, filmmaker and film buff, their widsom would win me over in a second and I would probably spend the whole dinner writing down everything they would say. And this is why I shouldn’t be hosting dinner parties! I would be fangirling the whole time, to which Hitchcock would probably say ‘Carol, it’s only a party.’

So what exactly did they say? And why should we listen to them? Well, if you’re a writer/director/filmmaker, these six quotes are definitely something you will want to keep on your living-room or office wall.

Here they are!

‘The more subtle and elegant you are in hiding your plot points, the better you are as a writer.’ Billy Wilder
