5 Underrated 70s Bands From The UK
The UK has produced an astonishing amount of good music, and the 70s were no exception. Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie, T-Rex, and let’s not forget the Bay City Rollers. Actually, let’s. But for the most part, the 70s were a crackin’ decade for UK music. And yet, there are a few bands that still seem to be relatively underrated. They were either one or two-hit wonders in several countries BUT the UK, or are just in general under-appreciated despite their considerable talent.
Here are five UK bands from the 1970s predominantly that I believe are criminally underrated.
The Sweet
One of the ultimate glam rock bands from the 70s and certainly the one with the best outfits, The Sweet comprised singer Brian Connolly, drummer Mick Tucker, bassist Steve Priest and lead guitarist Andy Scott, a.k.a. four of the finest musicians around at the time. Not only is Scott, the last surviving member, an outstanding guitar player, but Tucker is perhaps the most underrated drummer of his generation. The Sweet have been invariably referred to as a glam rock band and a rock and roll band, and stuff like ‘Teenage Rampage’ and ‘Fox on the Run’ really cemented their rock ’n’ roll credentials, though ‘Ballroom Blitz’ might be their best-known song outside the UK. ‘Block Buster!’, however, is their only UK number 1.
