You know what there should be more of in this world? Songs about detectives and private investigators. We have songs about love, the sun, the moon and even lions sleeping in the mighty jungle. What about Sam Spade? Huh? Where’s his song? I always thought that if I were a musician, I would like to do a concept album that’s a crime story or something like that. But alas, I have no musical talent.

Anyway, here are 5 songs about those gumshoes who like to crack cases wide open.

Private Eyes by Hall and Oates

We kick off our list with one of the most fun songs to sing-along and clap along to. ‘Private Eyes’ was taken off Hall and Oates’ 1981 album of the same name, and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Though the video features the band dressed in PI attire, the song, with its possessive and frustrated lyrics, seems to point to a rocky relationship.

It is one of Daryl Hall and John Oates’ most iconic songs and whatever omnishambles is going on between them at the moment, at least we’ll always have the music. But seriously, please make up already, you’re breaking everyone’s hearts.
