London’s BFI Flare Festival is one of my favourite events of the year. The LGBTQIA+ community is celebrated in so many different ways for two weeks with queer films, stories and characters from all around the world. This year, I was there from the very beginning, with the opening film GIRL PICTURE, followed by an amazing Opening Gala! Throughout the week, I got to see some of the most amazing films I’ve seen in a long time and so I thought I’d bring you the reviews of some of them! Do check out these films if you can.

In no particular order, here are 4 mini reviews of some of the best films of 2022’s Flare:

GIRL PICTURE (2022, dir. Alli Haapasalo)

An ode to first loves, sexual awakenings and female friendships, GIRL PICTURE opened this year’s festival with, pardon the cliché, a bang. You’ve got Ronkko (Eleonoora Kauhanen), who wants to feel something, emotionally and sexually, but who might actually fall somewhere else on the sexuality spectrum; you’ve got Mimmi (Aamu Milonoff), who doesn’t believe in love at first sight or any of the things cool teens don’t usually believe in; and you’ve got Emma (Linnea Leino), a shy figure skater who’s on her way to the European championships. We follow their lives over the course of three Friday nights, as Mimmi and Emma fall in love and Ronkko discovers herself in the most refreshing way…
