I couldn’t resist! You know I love the 80s, and even though I was born in ’92, my heart belongs to 1984. And 81 and 82 and 83 and- you get the picture. Let’s get into it, shall we? Here are some more underrated tunes from the 80s!

Promised you a Miracle by Simple Minds — Talk about kicking off a song! Impossibly groovy and oh so catchy, it just reeks 80s from start to finish. And what a bassline. Simple Minds have been around for ages and ages, it seems, and while their mid to late 80s period was probably their most successful (‘Don’t You Forget About Me’, US number 1, ‘Belfast Child’, UK number 1…), I was sort of shocked to find this is from their fifth album… released in 1982. Hats off.

I’m in love with a German film star by The Passions — The ominous opening chord sends shivers down my metaphorical spine, as well as the real one. The rest of the song is an atmospheric love confession, gorgeous and moody. And turns out it’s about a roadie for the Sex Pistols and The Clash who starred in German movies. Which is nonsense. Everyone knows Marlene Dietrich is the answer to everything in life.

Wishing I Was Lucky by Wet Wet Wet — Wet Wet Wet’s debut single peaked at number 6 in the UK charts, but has since been overshadowed by the band’s more successful 1994 number 1 ‘Love Is All Around’. To me, Wishing I Was
